Las listas siempre generan polémica y más si estas abordan temas tan polémicos como el Metal, un género con tantas variantes que incluso los propios “metaleros” no logran ponerse de acuerdo, sin embargo, la revista Rolling Stone se aventuró recientemente a crear la lista con los 100 mejores discos de metal.
La lista contiene a las agrupaciones y artistas clásicas del género, así como algunas bandas pertenecientes a la escena underground del metal, pero también incluye a grupos más recientes como Avenged Sevenfold y Evanescence, por lo que la polémica no se ha hecho esperar.
Los primeros lugares son ocupados por Black Sabbath y su Paranoid de 1970; le sigue Metallica con Master of Puppets, estrenado en 1986; el British Steel de Judas Priest, publicado en 1980, The Number of the Beast, lanzado en el1982 por Iron Maiden; y de nuevo Black Sabbath con su disco homónimo de 1970.
